Top 5 Burger Joints in Berkeley

On some days, there’s nothing I want more than a juicy burger. If you’re in the Berkeley area, here are my top choices for you:

  1. Eureka! – (4 stars, $$ on Yelp)
Eureka! is the perfect place for happy hour meets dinner. It is located in the heart of Downtown Berkeley, just down the block from the BART station. Grab some friends, grab a drink, grab a burger, and prepare to be bloated.

Leanne’s Pick: I love the Fresno Fig Burger so much that I don’t even want to try anything else. Don’t forget to order their truffle fries! Their mac and cheese is really good, too.

  2. 900 Grayson – (4 stars, $$ on Yelp)
900 Grayson is located deep in Southwest Berkeley, but the food is well worth the journey. This restaurant is well-known for their chicken and waffles plate–which is delicious–but they also serve really good burgers. You won’t find an extensive burger menu here, just one perfectly crafted option per protein type (beef, pork, chicken, fish, and veggie).

Leanne’s Pick: You can’t go wrong with the Grayson Burger, but I particularly like The Piggy. I still need to go back to try The Charlie–the seared ahi tuna burger.

  3. Barney’s Gourmet Hamburgers (3.5 stars, $$ on Yelp)
There are multiple Barney’s locations around Berkeley, but my favorite is the one in North Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto. Barney’s burgers are so filling that you really shouldn’t be ordering anything else with your meal, but you will. Their salads, fried goods, and milkshakes are just too yummy.

Leanne’s Pick: I’m a total sucker for anything with avocado, so my top choice here is the Baja Burger. I also highly recommend the onion rings, spicy curly friesOreo milkshake, and root beer float. Barney’s has, in my opinion, the best onion rings ever–super crunchy and thickly battered, with parmesan sprinkled on top.

  4. Bongo Burger (4 stars, $ on Yelp)
I think it’s safe to say that Bongo Burger is the Cal student’s go-to burger joint. Bongo Burger is super affordable and they have locations on each side of campus.

Leanne’s Pick: If you’re a fan of mushrooms, the Mushroom Burger is the way to go–flavorful, sautéed mushrooms and swiss cheese over a beef patty. Yum!

  5. Pappy’s Grill & Sports Bar (3 stars, $ on Yelp)
Pappy’s is a college bar that’s mostly popular for their happy hour specials, Taco Tuesdays, and Wing Wednesdays. They also have a short burger menu (including vegetarian options) with items ranging between $4.50-$7. You won’t find fancy burgers here, just cheap and satisfying goodness.

Leanne’s Pick: I always love a good bacon cheeseburger. If you’re really hungry, a combo meal should be more than enough to fill you up.

Dear Vegetarians,

I didn’t forget about you. Although I highly doubt that you made it to the end of this post, I would like to recommend Saturn Cafe and Smart Alec’s for vegan- and vegetarian- friendly burger options.
